Having followed the typical corporate path, I knew I wasn’t happy and had to make a change. Without a clear direction in mind, instead of pinning down a particular ‘role’, I considered all the qualities lacking in my (then) job that I wanted my next one to fulfil, whatever that may be. Among other things, these included human connection, to support the development of others and to build and create something from the ground up (coffee pun intended). I had always wanted to start my own business and hospitality ticked many boxes. Being detail-oriented meant that exploring the world of speciality coffee seemed especially suited to me. With a speciality coffee bar in mind, it was time to dive in. I took a couple of courses, started drinking coffee (that’s right, I wasn’t a coffee drinker before!) and working as a barista in various different cafes to learn from as many people and workplaces as possible. I wanted to learn everything. This gave me invaluable experience, not just in brewing coffee, learning about workflow and shop design, but also the awareness of the day-to-day challenges faced by baristas on the ground, as well as the what-not-to-dos. Now, 6 years later, here we are serving many of the same faces who walked through our doors from the very beginning (and now even their children too), while still welcoming new ones every day.
